Are there toilet facilities on the ferry?

Tamar Crossings is a local government transport service, with our primary responsibility being to provide a safe and reliable crossing between Devon and Cornwall. Public toilet facilities are not a core or legal requirement of the ferry service itself.

However, we fully recognise that access to toilet facilities is important to our passengers, particularly during periods of disruption or longer waiting times. For this reason, temporary public toilet facilities have been provided on both the Devonport and Torpoint sides of the crossing.

There are also other public facilities available locally, including facilities near Sainsbury’s in Torpoint and at Mount Wise and Devonport Park on the Plymouth side.

We are continuing to explore options for improving toilet facilities at the crossing. However, providing permanent facilities involves considerably more than simply opening a toilet building. There are ongoing costs associated with new construction or installation, utilities, cleaning, maintenance, security, vandalism, health and safety, and long-term management. As there has been no specific increase in funding or toll income to meet these additional costs, we must balance any improvements against the wider responsibility to operate the crossing sustainably and provide value for public money.

Discussions regarding longer-term options are continuing and, in the meantime, we will continue to look for practical, affordable and suitable arrangements for customers on both sides of the crossing.
