TamarTag is name of the Electronic Tolling System for the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Crossings.
The TamarTag is a small electronic device fitted on the inside of the vehicle windscreen which is read either by roadside equipment at the Tamar Bridge or by a handheld reader at the Torpoint Ferry.
Tag users are required to set up a pre-paid account, (minimum £20 for a single car account) and each time a tolled crossings is made, the appropriate toll is deducted from the account and the transaction recorded. Tags are supplied free of charge and tag crossings enjoy the same 50% discount as users of the old paper voucher scheme. Accounts can be set up for multiple vehicles, and can be topped up by a range of methods including direct debits and credit/debit cards. You can top up your account using the telephone, internet, mail or by visiting the Tamar Bridge Customer Service Centre (at the rear of Tamar Bridge Office) or the Torpoint Ferry Offices during office hours. Tops-ups will be credited to accounts within 24hrs of receipt of payment.
Those users who qualify for free crossings, including those in the Joint Committee's Mobility Scheme, will be able to use electronic 'smartcards' which are credit card sized devices that can be scanned at both crossings and reconciled against exempt user accounts. Such users will be contacted directly about this transition in April 2007.
At the Tamar Bridge new signs above toll lanes indicate if lanes are open and if they are manned. These new signs also show the new yellow 'T' which symbolises the tag facility. Tag customers are able to use any lane that is open, but 'Tag Only' lanes will be unmanned and these lanes should flow more smoothly than mixed use lanes.
At the Tamar Bridge TamarTag users should drive slowly into a toll lane and be prepared to stop at the barrier. Once the automated system in the lane has verified the tag account status and that there are sufficient funds for the crossing, an electronic sign at the roadside will indicate that the toll has been deducted and the barrier will be raised. In most cases this will happen before drivers reach the barrier. There is an intercom system in each lane if there is a problem with the account.
At the Torpoint Ferries all ferries are equipped with ETC and collectors use handheld readers to validate tag and account status.
