When the Tamar Bridge was built the public were informed that there would be no fee for crossing into Cornwall.
This is a common misconception.
The Tamar Bridge Act allows tolls to be collected for as long as the crossings have operating and maintenance costs that are not covered by government funding. As the crossings still have significant ongoing costs, tolls remain necessary under the current legislation.
We continue to engage with government and partners to explore options that could reduce costs for users in the future.
